The Resilience of Sámi Culture

We met with the indigenous people of the Arctic regions of Norway on a rare and pristine summer, as they were herding reindeers in the mountains.

The Sámi have endured 100 years of ban and assimilation by the Norwegian state, and while they remain unknown to the public Europeans, they are the only indigenous people of mainland Europe. The Sámi carry the heritage of all of Europe.

They are the only indigenous people of Europe, and carry the heritage of a continent. Their culture can be traced back more than 6.000 years ago as the nomads followed the reindeer across a big part of Fennoskandia and Russia. They call the area Sámi, a land without a country. Máret Ravdna Buljos children are the first in many generations to grow up and learn the reclaimed language and culture of their municipality in Arctic Norway. Through hundreds of years of persecution and oppression in Norway, the ancient Sami culture of the north has survived and a generation of Sami people are reclaiming their heritage. Join us as we are accepted to visit Máret and her community reindeer herding in the mountains of coastal Northern Norway.
