Fishing on Horseback

A fisherwoman towers on a powerful Belgian draft horse of 1,5 tonnes. They plow through the waves at Oostduinkerke, Belgium, keeping alive an ancient and sustainable UNESCO listed fishing technique used to provide for your family.

For centuries, people in Oostduinkerke have been catching shrimp on horseback, a time-honored tradition deeply tied to nature, relying on the elements, tides, and the bond between horse and rider. Floris, a hefty 1.5-ton horse, and her trusty fisherwoman Lien dive into the sea with ease.
