The twilight of shell fishing

The shell fishermen dig their hands into the sand of the beaches of Normandy, fishing for shells, as their ancestors before them has done for centuries.

Her father and grand-father were “expéditeur de coques”, she is now in charge of the family business of buying and selling the hand-picked shells.

She fears for the future of the shells due to warm climate and soft water: “shells are fragile. Last summer, we dug them up dead, cooked in the sand”, she says.
